Beagle Walk - Sunday 27th July 2008
in aid of Beagle Welfare

What a fantastic day we had!     Thank you all for turning up, thank you all for walking and thank you most of all, for raising *£2,700 for Beagle Welfare.

This web page has been set up so that we can share the photos and each others' comments on the day.   Keep your eye on this page, as I will be adding to it over the next two or three weeks as comments, news and new photos arrive on my computer.

For those who weren't there, you missed a great day.   On   Sunday 27th July, we held a five mile sponsored Beagle Walk in the beautiful countryside around Manley near Frodsham. The walk was followed by tea and home made cakes served in the garden.

Around 40 Beagles and Honorary Beagles turned up and walked the walk.   Around 70 people turned up with them and trundled along in their wake.

Five miles in the hot sunshine.   Everyone did brilliantly.   At home base, we counted them out, and then we counted them back again.   We sent marshalls round to check that there was no-one in difficulty.   Three marshalls and no one to rescue!   (well, except Jim Lawrence's group who for some bizarre reason decided to do the walk the opposite way round to everyone else and who of course were the only people to get lost!   Harold whizzed out in my car to fetch them back from a pub where they had taken shelter)

Everyone came back from the walk hot and sweaty and red in the face.   But our catering team (John, Olga and Keith) were ready with the tea urn and cakes and spirits soon revived.   Home made cakes had been baked and donated by friends, neighbours and family.   Darren and Sam Williams, who had travelled from Abergele with their 15 week old Beagle puppy, had donated 18 bottles of wine as well as some raffle prizes (as well as raising lots of money in sponsorship) and the catering team did a roaring trade selling this at 50p a glass.

It was hot.   A hot, hot day when there was no shade to be had.   The sun shone, feet ached, tummies got fed.   Beagles panted, drank copious amounts of water and then had whatever they left poured over them in an attempt to cool them down.

There were Beagles Beagles everywhere. Young Beagles, old Beagles, fit Beagles, some not so fit beagles.   They were all beautiful.   All stunningly well behaved.   Every single one.   40 Beagles all in close proximity and not a single grumble.   I had a vet on call in case we needed it, but other than a couple of exhausted dogs (and people), we had no major incidents either on the walk, in the garden or just generally.

Even the cake made it through unscathed by canine molars.   Well, except one piece.   My very own Oscar, the monster dog, took the opportunity, whilst walking past a neighbour's plate, to snatch a slice of banana cake!   Carolyn simply broke the bit with Beagle teeth marks on it off, and calmly ate the rest as we moved rather quickly to the next group of people!

AND ALL OF THIS RAISED JUST OVER £2,700 FOR BEAGLE WELFARE.

Look at the photos.     Please take a few moments to cast your eye over the thank you page - a lot of people put a lot of effort into the day behind the scenes.     Please also look at the page which includes coments from people who attended.   Send me your comments and I will include them.   Also have a look at the speech that Helen SHOULD have made, had she not left it behind somewhere!

But finally AND MOST IMPORTANTLY, please now collect up your sponsorship money and send it to Helen.   Cheques made payable to Beagle Welfare.

It was a pleasure, a real pleasure to be able to host this event.   We'll be doing it again next year.   So keep your walking boots polished!

Helen addressing the masses!   Making a speech off the cuff as she had left her fully written out one behind!
Hot dogs, hot people
Just looking for some shade!
One of the younger attendees - 12 week old Turpin, who didn't actually walk the walk, but is looking forward to next year's event when he will give everyone a run for their money!
